Stoughton Youth Sweep Master Showman Contest

MADISON, WIS. – Sydney Tone, Stoughton, Wis., was named the seventh Master Showman at the Dane County Fair on Saturday, July 22. Featuring the top senior showmen in five species – beef, dairy, dairy goats, sheep and swine – the five participants were evaluated on their performance and knowledge of each animal.

Tone earned her new title after being named the Reserve Senior Champion showman of the dairy goat show. She is the daughter of Laurie Schellinger and Steve Tone and is a member of the Triangle Troopers 4-H Club. Receiving Reserve Champion Master Showman honors was the top senior dairy showman, Lindsey Sarbacker, daughter of Candi and David Sarbacker. Sarbacker is also from Stoughton and a member of the Triangle Troopers 4-H club.

Other participants, all from Stoughton, included Grace Link and Avery Spilde of the Triangle Troopers 4-H Club and Shelby Veum of Stoughton FFA. Each participant received a cash award, sponsored by Mark Boyke and Merial, now a Boehringer Ingelheim company.

First developed in 2011 by Kate Griswold, a long-time Dane County Fair exhibitor, the Master Showman contest at the Dane County Fair challenges the best senior showmen to learn about other species and become well-rounded showmen. The program received its first funding through a J.C. Penny scholarship and has since become an annual tradition supported by the local community.

Since 1851, the Dane County Fair has been a “Ticket to Fun” as it serves as the gathering place for the community of Dane County. The annual event that features a world class carnival, free concerts, animals, fair food, youth projects and more will be held July 19-23, 2017 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis.
